The Norwegian Dole Horse

Our Norwegian ‘Dole’ horses are the pride of Venabustallen. These big, powerful, yet gentle horses are one of the three native Norwegian breeds. Dole horses are powerfully built, bred to pull heavy loads. They are renowned for their surefootedness and gentle, easy temper – making them perfectly suited to long rides in mountainous terrain. Their versatility and calm personalities make them excellent family horses.

The Dole horse originated in Gudbrandsdalen in the 19th century, bred for farm and forestry work. Heavier stallions from the European continent were used to breed a heavier and stronger horse than the regular Norwegian pleasure breeds. Modern Dole horses typically fall into lighter or heavier categories.

Today the Doles are used for a variety of equestrian sports, notably driving and recreational riding. The Dole horses have their own National Association and championship series, where riders can compete in dressage, driving and “versatile riding and driving”. The interest in Dole horses is currently on the rise internationally. We are very excited to see this magnificent Norwegian horse take its place in the spotlight. Our very own mare Elsa won Norway’s ‘Dole Horse of the Year 2018’ in a season-long championship competition that takes place across many disciplines. Congratulations to Elsa and our stable manager Ingeborg Tvete!
